National Pretzel Day! Here’s where you can nab some of the best pretzels in town

It’s National Pretzel Day on the 26th of April, so here’s where you can find some of the best pretzels (and the best deals) in Cleveland.

The German Experience

Cleveland Donauschwaban, also known as The German Cultural Center (7370 Columbia Road, Olmsted Township) normally only serves lunch during the week, but every Friday the center stays open for “bar night”. You can order up a genuine Bavarian pretzel with a crock of beer cheese fondue in a rustic German club environment.

Beer hall Hofbrauhaus (1550 Chester Ave) is creating a one-day-only twist: The Everything Pretzel. Like “everything bagel”, but sitting atop one of Hofbrauhaus’ pretzels, accompanied by obatzda (a German cheese dip). Need more variety in your life? Order the pretzel trio. It’s one small everything pretzel, one small Bavarian pretzel, and one small cinnamon sugar pretzel. Accompanied by a beer cheese, an obatzda and a vanilla cream dipping sauce.

Food Court Goodness

Auntie Anne’s, that butter-riffic mall food court staple, is offering a BOGO (buy one, get one free) deal all Friday with any purchase of a original or cinnamon pretzel.

Going to the B2K “Millenium Tour” concert at the Q…sorry, ROCKETSHIP MORTGAGE FIELDHOUSE? Stop by SeeSaw Pretzel Shop and pick up one of chef Jonathon Sawyer’s pretzel creations, like “Roasted Ohio garlic & parmesan with pimento cheese”. You can’t eat here unless you’re in the Fieldhouse, so be sure to seek it out.

Big N’ Cheesy

Great Lakes Brewing Company (2516 Market Ave) offers barley pretzels in their Brewpub location. Jumbo spent grain pretzels served with Stilton cheddar sauce, raspberry honey mustard and pickle chips. Be sure to pair it up with one of the pub’s tap-only beers, like the Mysterious Ways Doppelbock. This Friday, they’ll only be $5 each.

Located on the Cuyahoga River’s Irishtown Bend, Merwins Wharf (1785 Merwin Ave) will give you a great view while you take on their 1 1/2 pound BIG soft pretzel. This baked behemoth is served with “Wharf mustard” and beer cheese.

Make Your Own

Maybe you’re saying “Hey, I could make a better pretzel myself!” You can prove it to the world and yourself by taking a pretzel making class. Annie’s Signature Sweets is offering this one-day class at the historic Hildebrand building in Ohio City (3619 Walton Ave). A ticketed event, you’ll get to make, bake and take home your sweet or savory creations under the guidance of pastry chef Annie LoParo.
