Maria's Field of Hope is a sunflower field planted to bring awareness to diffused intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a terminal brain tumor that took the life of 7-year-old Maria McNamara.
The Prayers from Maria Children’s Glioma Cancer Foundation announced this will be the final year for the Avon sunflower field. In a Facebook post, the organization announced, “The field will continue to be there again this year but it will be our last year at this location.”
No announcement has been made on a new location for Maria’s Field of Hope but the post states “We will plant and bloom again.”
Each summer thousands of people flock to the beautiful field of sunflowers to pay homage to Maria McNamara.
6-year-old Maria was diagnosed with a diffused intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a terminal brain tumor. She passed away 14 months after being diagnosed at the age of seven. Maria’s parents planted Maria’s Field of Hope and established Prayers from Maria – Children’s Glioma Cancer Foundation dedicated to funding global research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for childhood brain tumors, known as gliomas.
In 2017 the field raised $100,000 for cancer research.
